All Madison students must re-enroll

MADISON – Leaders of Madison City Schools are facing a system-wide problem with determination. Overcrowding in schools has prompted procedures to confirm that all students satisfy residency requirements.

“Being good stewards of our resources includes being accountable with our enrollment – making sure that students meet our residency requirements,” MCS Superintendent Robby Parker said in a district-wide announcement.

“Unfortunately, we are finding increased instances of students attending our schools but living out of zone. This is done mostly by using false addresses or by securing a temporary Madison address that is never intended to be the permanent residence,” Parker said.

Re-enrollment opened to students on June 1 and will continue through July 10. This timeframe should provide ample time to gather required records including a utility bill, property tax receipt or lease document, and drivers’ license of the custodial parent, Parker said.

“The registration team wants to emphasize that current students that are not re-enrolled by July 10 will be withdrawn, just like they would if found with an invalid address after the school year begins,” he said.

This past year, school officials found about 20 students enrolled with invalid addresses and paperwork, but they estimate about 100 or more students actually were enrolled improperly.

Parker said the district’s continued growth “is a testament to the confidence parents place in Madison City when they move here because of our schools. That growth presents challenges with facilities, staffing, zoning, curriculum planning, transportation and other support services. It also forces us to be extra vigilant in managing our budget.”

Re-enrollment is available online only. Central Office issued instructions via SchoolMint.
