Niemeier to discuss her book, ‘In the Hands of Strangers’ at library

MADISON – Kim Niemeier, author of “In the Hands of Strangers,” will discuss her work during a book signing at Madison Public Library on Aug. 14.

Niemeier’s event will start at 6 p.m. “The library always loves to support and promote local authors. Any time we can give them a venue to share their stories, we will,” Adult Services Librarian Anne Wood said.

“Kim’s book is about her father’s extraordinary journey through World War II as a fighter pilot,” Wood said. “She tells his story in a way that educates and inspires. We are thrilled to let her do that at the Madison library.”

According to Wood, Niemeier’s book is a captivating tale that she describes as being “about my father who was a World War II fighter pilot who was shot down over occupied France six days after D-Day. He was hidden by the French Resistance and eventually walked back to Allied Lines and then back to England.”

“The way my father looked at it, he had simply gone over to Europe as a young man and risked his life for his country because that was his job. He did what was asked of him to the best of his ability, without question or complaint, and then he came home to get on with his life,” Niemeier said.

Kim Moretto Niemeier grew up in Oak Ridge, Tenn., home of the Manhattan Project. However, she knew little about World War II and her father’s heroic experiences as a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot flying combat missions over France and Germany.

Niemeier said she embraced the mission to write her book, which gave her a “deeper appreciation for those of the Greatest Generation whose stories all deserve to be told.”

Kim was able to take her father back to France almost 50 years later to see the families that helped to save him, Wood said.

A realtor for 32 years, Kim lives in Huntsville with husband Charles. For information about Niemeier’s book, visit inthehandsofstrangers.com.
