August offers two chess events in Madison

MADISON – Madison City Chess League has scheduled two major events for players during August.

Sponsored by CB&S Bank, the Summer Knights Chess Tournament will be held at Rainbow Elementary School on Aug. 26. Registration is now open for players.

A mandatory meeting for players will be held at 9 a.m. Approximate times for rounds will be 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. Non-rated sections are likely to start sooner after the first round.

As customary, MCCL is offering both a Rated section for players with a U.S. Chess Federation rating and a Non-Rated section for beginning players. However, the league will not issue a tournament report to the USCF.

As a result, “This is an opportunity for everyone to relax, not worry about ratings, but play in their first chess tournament early in the school year to help prepare for the State Championship in Birmingham over Labor Day weekend,” MCCL Executive Director Ranae Bartlett said.

Rated sections will be K-12 (Open); K-12 Under 1000; and K-12 Under 500. Timing will be G/30/d5. First- through third-place winners will receives trophies, while fourth- through sixth-place players and Top Female will receive medals.

In Non-Rated play, the sections will include K-12; K-6; and K-3. Timing will be G/20. The player in first place will earn a trophy. The Top Female will receive a medal, with other medals issued based on enrollment. Â

Registration deadline is Aug. 23. Registration fee is $20 for MCCL members or $25 for players who are not members. To register, visit madisonchess.com/products/44.

The other August event is Learn to Play Chess Night on Aug. 29. Horizon Elementary School will host this session from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“We also need student volunteers who are experienced chess team members across Madison to help students learn,” Bartlett said. “Wear your MCCL shirts if you can volunteer and arrive at 5:30 p.m. You must also register to volunteer so we know you are coming. This volunteering is eligible for service hours.”

For learn-to-play night, participants must register online. To register, visit https://goo.gl/forms/gOtgZitHmSMYw9lq1.
