Discovery Scholars Bowl students place at tourneys

MADISON – Students in the Scholars Bowl team at Discovery Middle School have done their homework to compete and earn places in local and area tournaments this school year.

Their tournament schedule opened on Oct. 28 with the ‘Fun’ Tournament at Liberty Middle School. They traveled to Hoover High School on Nov. 4 for the Middle School Melee.

On Nov. 18, the Scholar’s Bowl team participated in the Oak Park Invitational Tournament at Oak Park Middle School in Decatur. Four of Discovery’s five teams progressed to the quarterfinal round. Discovery’s top finishing team earned fourth place.

Top scorers for the Oak Park Invitational Tournament were Rett Krome with 38 points per game; Soorya Ramesh, who earned 30 points per game; and Ashwin Prahbakar, who rated 28 PPG.

In their most recent contest, the Discovery Scholars Bowl team earned third place in the East Lawrence Middle School Tournament in Trinity on Dec. 2.

Their 2018 tournaments will include Russellville Middle School Invitational on Jan. 6, 2018; Liberty Middle School Invitational, Jan. 20, 2018; district tournament, Jan. 27, 2018; and state tournament at Hoover High School on Feb. 24.

Discovery teachers Dave Sippel and Karly Beavers volunteer time from their weekly schedules to sponsor the Scholar’s Bowl team.

Sponsors strive to make learning fun as student prepare for the academic trivia contests in this region. The goal is to create teams of scholars that can compete and win at local, regional and ultimately state tournaments.

Discovery Scholars Bowl has an open membership team that welcomes any student who is willing to make a commitment to participate in practices and tournaments. Ongoing team membership is contingent on willingness to prepare, compete and actively increase team members’ ability to help the team win.

Sponsors expect Scholars Bowl members to expand their knowledge base in three or more ‘mastery’ areas. These students challenge themselves, explore subjects of interest and master that knowledge for competition.
