Madison Garden Club plans plant sale on April 21

MADISON – Madison Garden Club is preparing for its annual plant sale with hard-to-find and hardy specimens, with most plants taken from the yards of club members.

The plant sale will be held on April 21 from 8 a.m. to noon. The sale will take place at 100 Bluebelle Drive in Madison, which is off Sullivan Street near the intersection with Brown’s Ferry Road. Shoppers will have easy access to the sale site and plenty of parking will be available.

“The plants in the sale are ones that have done well in our club members’ yards. They are from mature stock that have thrived in our hot summers and clay soil and should do well in local gardens,” club member and publicist Suzanne Kirkhuff said.

“The sale is staffed by the very gardeners who donated the plants, and the buyer can hear first-hand about planting tips and instructions,” Kirkhuff said. Most members of Madison Garden Club hold credentials as Master Gardeners.

At the sale, shoppers will find daylilies, hostas, tomatoes, peppers, roses, wildflowers, perennials, shrubs, herbs, shade plants and annuals. The club also will have a mini-flea market.

“The club has served the City of Madison for 55 years, and the proceeds from the sale will be used to fund the club’s projects in Madison throughout the year,” Kirkhuff said.

The club’s projects include filling large plant pots with flowers and evergreens on Main Street, decorating City Hall for Christmas and funding the “Every Light a Prayer for Peace” program that culminates with awards to several Madison school fifth-graders for their essay of “What Peace Means to Me.”

“The club also is donating funds and assisting with the Shiloh Cemetery Bible garden and antique rose garden on Mill Road,” Kirkhuff said.
