Music at Messiah to feature Adam Cobb

MADISON – Adam Cobb, a native of Madison, will perform an organ concert on May 20 as part of the Music at Messiah classical concert series.

Starting at 4 p.m., Cobb will use the new pipe organ that Messiah Lutheran Church members have installed recently. Music at Messiah is free and open to the public, spokesperson John W. Shriver said.

Cobb graduated from Bob Jones High School. Many residents heard and saw Cobb perform with Bob Jones Band on French horn and in Color Guard.

A recent graduate of Florida State University, Cobb earned a master’s degree in organ performance. He studied with Dr. Iain Quinn. This fall, Cobb will start to work on his doctorate.

In undergraduate study, Cobb received a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Samford University. Currently, he serves as Choir Director/Organist at Episcopal Church of the Advent in Tallahassee, Fla.

His schedule has become increasingly active as a concert organist with forthcoming concerts, including appearances at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta and Mayfair Organ Series at St. George, Hanover Square, London, United Kingdom.

As a composer, Cobb has written several pieces that have premiered in academic and church settings. Most recently, his settings of the “Preces and Responses,” “Magnificat” and “Nunc Dimittis” were premiered at Episcopal Church of the Advent during a service of Choral Evensong.

His composition “Voices” for SATB chorus (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), cello, piano and fixed media was introduced at Samford. His voice teacher at the time and Florida State University alumna Dr. Christina Villaverde commissioned his song cycle “Journey of Hope” for soprano and piano.

This summer, Cobb will study organ performance in Europe. “I have the opportunity to attend the 2018 Haarlem Summer Organ Academy in Haarlem, Netherlands on July 15-28,” Cobb said. “This is an amazing opportunity to study with organists from around the world while studying the music of Bach, Franck, Widor, Vierne, Alain, Messiaen, Escaich and Baptiste-Robin.”

Adam’s parents are Ralph and Peggy Cobb of Madison.

Messiah Lutheran’s address is 7740 U.S. 72. in Madison.
