Horizon students show science savvy at state

MADISON – Six students represented Horizon Elementary School at the Alabama State Science Fair and claimed several awards.

In the junior division for grades 6-8, Oz Cheek earned third place for his project, “More or Less,” a study of windmill efficiency.

Piper Cornelius’ project “I Wet My Plants … with Water” and Ashton Worley’s research for “Thumbprint Genetics” both received honorable mention, Horizon Gifted Specialist Beth Bero said.

For the fifth-grade division, ‘honorable mention’ is the top available award, but they can compete for special awards, Bero said.

Both receiving honorable mention for fifth-graders, Kaitlyn Johnson presented her work “Operation Spice Rack” and Jayden Gorrity evaluated “Which Water Has the Best Quality?”

Fifth-grader Jack Revera received honorable mention for his project, “Tracking Asteroids.” In other recognition at the Alabama State Science Fair, Jack won a week at U.S. Space Camp, $100 from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE, $100 from Huntsville Electro-Optical Society, a membership to the Von Braun Astronomical Society and a commendation and medal from the U.S. Navy.

In previous competition, Revera had won awards at both the Regional Science Fair and the Art of Sustainable Science event at Huntsville Botanical Garden.
