Liz Hurley Ribbon Run to benefit Madison Hospital

HUNTSVILLE/MADISON – Registration is now open for 15th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run 5K and Survivors’ Walk.

The 2018 Ribbon Run proceeds will help to purchase a new 3D tomosynthesis machine for Madison Hospital Breast Center. This technology creates multiple 3-D pictures of the breast using X-Rays, making breast cancer easier to detect in dense breast tissue.

In addition, the funds will allow Huntsville Hospital Breast Center to purchase a new ultrasound machine and three ultrasound upgrades.

Huntsville Hospital Foundation is sponsoring the event on Oct. 20 at Huntsville Junior High School. The Survivors’ Walk will start at 8 a.m. and allow race participants to honor and cheer for participating survivors of breast cancer. Then, the 5K race will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Top athletes from the race will receive Runner awards at 10 a.m. The event also will feature pink race shirts for the first time, free to every runner who registers.

“It is so amazing that we get to celebrate 15 years of the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run,” run co-chair Annette McAdams said. “We have raised more than $3.1 million in that time, and every penny has been used locally in the fight against breast cancer. Let’s make this year the best ever, and we can do that with the community’s support.”

In other activity, run organizers have unveiled the signature design for artwork that represents the 2018 Ribbon Run art. Madison resident Payge Semmes was named the showcase artist in a ceremony at Saint John Paul II Catholic High School library on Aug. 31.

Semmes holds the distinction as the first featured artist from Madison. Semmes works as art instructor at JPII High School. Semmes’ artwork, “Love is Hope,” will be featured on this year’s race T-shirts, which more than 6,100 runners will receive.

In 1999, WAFF 48 news anchor Liz Hurley established the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation after her own fight against breast cancer. Supporters have contributed more than $4.4 million to support awareness programs for breast cancer and to equip Huntsville and Madison Hospitals’ Breast Centers with the latest diagnostic technology.

Established in 1978, Huntsville Hospital Foundation is a not-for-profit organization as the fundraising arm of Huntsville Hospital. For more information, call 256-265-8077 or visit huntsvillehospitalfoundation.org.
