Madison police officer receives cyber security specialist certification

MADISON — The Madison Police Department announced Nov. 8 that Officer Ted Thiele, who is assigned to the Crime Scene Unit, has earned the Cyber Security Specialist Certification through the University of Louisville.

Thiele completed this certification, which took the majority of this year, in addition to his regular duties as a crime scene officer, evidence technician and cellular forensics specialist, according to a news release from MPD.

This program is funded by the U.S. National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. Entry into the program was competitive. Thiele had to submit an application and be approved to participate in this training, and not all who applied were accepted.

“This is a significant accomplishment for Officer Thiele as well as the Madison Police Department and the citizens we serve,” read the release.

Thiele has been with the Madison Police Department for more than a decade and currently serves as the crime scene technician. With the certification, he will be able to expand his current cyber security investigations and analysis, as well as contribute to the cyber security of the Madison Police Department.

In 2014, Ted Thiele attended Career Day at Liberty Middle School where he demonstrated a metal detector, which he sometimes uses in his job as a crime scene investigator in Madison. CONTRIBUTED
