Library to host best-selling author Byrn, ‘Cake Mix Doctor’

MADISON – “New York Times” Best-Selling Author Anne Byrn, known as the “Cake Mix Doctor,” will appear at a talk, tasting and luncheon at Madison Public Library on Dec. 5.

During her Madison visit, Byrn will share stories, recipes and memories. She has written 12 books on cooking and baking and is a frequent guest on QVC network and ABC’s “Good Morning, America.”

The Madison session will open at 11 a.m. in the library auditorium. Byrn will sign copies of her books after the luncheon. Additional copies of her books will be sold.

Ticket price is $45. Each ticket includes lunch, a cookie tasting and a copy of her latest book, “American Cookie.” Seating is limited and open on first-come, first-serve basis.

To order tickets, visit huntsvillelibraryfoundation.org/tickets. For more information, call 256-532-2358.

A Nashville native, Byrn has defined her passion for “great tasting food made from local and seasonal ingredients, and, may I add, shared with family and friends on my porch. I love to stage impromptu dinner parties, grow heirloom flowers, revisit old recipes and help others cook and bake better”

“American Cookie,” her newest cookbook, offers recipes for numerous types of American cookies, from tea cakes to Toll House, from Snickerdoodles to school-lunch oatmeal, from icebox cookies to jumbles and more.

“I baked my first cake — devil’s food — standing on my tip-toes in my mother’s 1960s Nashville kitchen. I learned to cook by watching my mom,” Byrn said.

Byrn graduated from the University of Georgia. As food editor of “The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,” she wrote about Lane Cake, Japanese Fruit Cake, barbecue, scuppernong jam, cornbread, souffles, local apples and other topics.

On sabbatical from the newspaper, she baked in Paris at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine.

She developed and wrote “The Cake Mix Doctor” after facing a last-minute rush to bake cupcakes for a school bake sale. “It was a breakout hit, instructing readers to skip the box directions, following mine instead,” Bryn said.
