Boston Marathon Featured Three From Madison

BOSTON, Mass.- Three runners from Madison were among the more than 30,000 who took part in the 123rd running of the famed Boston Marathon on Patriot Day in the New England city of Boston.

Fighting rain, sometimes heavy, with temperatures at 55 degrees, runners from all over the globe took to the 26.2-mile course and came away with memories to last a lifetime. Those from Madison did very well among the deluge of heavy rain, crowded streets and personal struggles to complete the race in a good time.

The final results from those representing Madison included David Moulder, 35, with a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes, 31 seconds. Overall, he was finisher number 4,061 while being No. 3,663 among males; Matthew Hunt, 40, 3:23:01, 7,257 overall, 5950 males; David Jones, 46, 3:24:51, 7,748 overall, 6,236 males.

The overall winner of the race was Lawrence Cherno of Kenya with a finish time of 2:07:57 and a near-photo finish with Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia. The two sprinted to the finish line in the last couple hundred yards. The top female runner was Worknesh Degefa, 28, of Ethiopia with a winning time of 2:23:31.

The race was hosted by the Boston Athletic Association, which was established in 1887. With its major sponsor of John Hancock, the race presented $871,000 in prize money while runners and businesses raised more than $36-million for charities.

With 9,700 volunteers assisting, the event brought in an estimated $100-million for the local economy in Boston. This year there were 118 countries represented in the 32,500 entrees.
