Bess House named top teacher at Liberty

MADISON – Liberty Middle School employees have spoken about their choice for the educator to hold the title of 2019 “Teacher of the Year.” Their choice is Bess House, who teaches sixth-grade language arts.

House accepted her award from Robert V. Parker, Superintendent of Madison City Schools, and Liberty Principal Shannon Brown. Other staff members involved with the presentation were MCS Chief Academic Officer Heather Donaldson, Liberty Assistant Principals Ryan Foy, Ambra Hamilton and Treva Stewart; and Assistant Superintendent Eric Terrell.

Before coming to Madison City Schools, House accepted her first teaching assignment with Huntsville City School for two years. Then for another two years, she worked for Mountain Brook Schools.

“I have taught middle school for 13 years. I am finishing my ninth year at Liberty,” she said.

For the past eight years, House has served as sponsor for the Student Ambassadors at Liberty. “I also have served as the Language Arts Department lead for many years at Liberty,” House said.

House attended college at the University of Alabama. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education language arts in 2006.

“After getting married in 2008, I moved to the Huntsville metro area with my husband. He grew up in Huntsville, and we decided to raise our family here,” she said.

House said her grandmother is the person who has the greatest impact on her as an educator. “My grandmother taught fifth grade for years, and her impact on my life is undeniable. She was a role model to me in how she treated others,” House said.

In her spare time, House enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and attending University of Alabama football games.
