Anna Kelley named ‘Teacher of the Year’ at Madison elementary

MADISON – Every day, Anna Kelley’s students teach her a different lesson. She is “Teacher of the Year” at Madison Elementary School.

“I’ve had many special kids walk through my doors. Even though I’m the teacher, they continue to teach me new things each day,” Anna said.

Coincidentally, her husband Michael Kelley also received the “Teacher of the Year” honor this year. He teaches third-graders at Mill Creek Elementary School.

“It was so cool to experience this accomplishment together. We were both able to be at each other’s school when the award was presented,” she said. “It was so fun to see the look of surprise on Michael’s face.”

“God has definitely led us to this career. We hope to continue to glorify Him,” she said.

Anna has taught first-graders at Madison elementary for five years. She also sponsors the STEM Club and serves on its advisory committee.

After attending Calhoun Community College, Anna graduated from Athens State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. During college, she worked at Mother’s Morning Out at Mount Zion Baptist Church and served as a summer missionary with fourth-graders through seniors.

In school as a struggling student, Anna had trouble in learning material that her classmates absorbed quickly. “I can remember frustration, sadness and embarrassment. I just couldn’t learn to read,” Anna said.

“To this day, I remember encouraging words and love that Mrs. Hacker showed me. In December, I ran into her in Nashville, and I could barely speak. I knew if I spoke more, I would cry. When we went our separate ways, I did,” Anna said.

“Every child deserves a teacher like Mrs. Hacker. The teacher who encourages, builds confidence and just loves on you — the teacher, even after 20 years, you remember the way (he or she) made you feel,” Anna said.

The Kelley’s children are Maggie, a fourth-grader at Mill Creek; two-year-old Emory; and one-year-old Ellis.

Anna enjoys spending time with her family, regardless of what they’re doing. “It’s the fun from the memories we’re making. We love swimming, going on trips and going to church,” she said.

On her birthday this year, Anna ran her first half-marathon. She has a twin brother.
