All-Star Sports Week Set To Feature Local Athletes And Coaches

All-Star Sports Week Set To Feature Local Athletes And Coaches

MONTGOMERY- The 23rd annual AHSAA North-South All-Star Sports Week is set for July 15-19 in Montgomery and this year will include two new sports in the All-Star scheduled lineup. For the first time in the series’ history both tennis and golf will be held in competition along with the mainstay sports of basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, cross country and football.

Jamie Lee, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association, which host the event, said he is excited to see the new sports that are now being included. He added, “This gives us an opportunity to see up close the outstanding tennis players and golfers we have competing at our high schools across the state.”

The selected squads and its rosters were selected two months ago and may have changed since the initial release.

In the original rosters, the North-South competition were to include Alex Rainer and Dallas Burkes of James Clemens in the boy’s tennis competition. In girl’s soccer, Jessica Glassman from Bob Jones. The softball squad from the North featured third baseman Kamryn Warman of Sparkman and Kent Chambers from Bob Jones as the official administration coach. The North baseball squad was scheduled to have two of the Class 7A state championship runners-up from Bob Jones with infielder and pitcher Caden Rose and first baseman and pitcher Camden Hill while the head coach of the North squad will be the head coach of Bob Jones’ program Jared Smith. The girl’s basketball roster was to include two members of the highly ranked team from Madison Academy as both Destinee McGhee and Jaden Langford were chosen. The football squad will feature offensive lineman Colby Morrell of Bob Jones and linebacker Xavier Hopkins of Sparkman.

The Tuesday, July 16 schedule will feature both baseball and basketball competitions taking place while the softball, cross country and soccer events will be held Wednesday, July 17. The Thursday, July 18 schedule will include competitions in volleyball, golf, tennis and football.

All of the events will be held in Montgomery. The records of the competitions include- Football: South leads series 30-27-2; Boys Basketball: North leads 48-28; Girls Basketball: North leads 19-3; Baseball: North leads 23-12-1; Softball: North leads 25-21-3; Boys Soccer: North leads 11-4-1; Girls Soccer: North leads 15-2-1; Volleyball: North leads 14-7; Boys Cross Country: tied 1-1; Girls Cross Country: tied 1-1.

All-Star Sports Week was introduced in 1997 as part of the AHSAA’s annual conference. Prior to that year, only football and boys basketball All-Star games were played. Football is made up of recent graduating seniors while the remainder of the sports feature only upcoming senior student-athletes.
