Republic closes public drop-off sites for recyclables, SWDA offers list of alternative places

MADISON COUNTY – There have been some posts on Facebook from area residents confused over the closer of the Republic Services recycling facility on A Cleaner Way in Huntsville. According to Doc Holliday, executive director of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority, the facility was chained off with a sign stating the facility and public drop site would be closed on Aug. 1, and would no longer accept recyclables.

The move to close the facility is in response to the SWDA not renewing its contract with Republic and changing to an automated monthly residential pick-up program utilizing rolling carts.

“At the expiration of the current recycling contract with Republic on July 31, 18-gallon bins and county drop-sites will no longer be serviced as part of the SWDA curbside recycling program,” Holiday said. “Beginning Aug. 1, all residential curbside recycling services will utilize the 95-gallon rolling carts with automated pickup.”

In order to receive a new cart, residents must Opt-In to the program by either visiting www.recycling-alliance.com or calling the Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA) at 256-801-2278.

In an effort to provide alternative solutions to citizens that have historically utilized the drop site located in front of the Republic Services facility, Holliday said he reached out to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) for a list of registered recyclers in our area.

“In the meantime, we have reached out to three local recyclers in the area who have said they are willing to take various commodities,” Holliday said.
