In A Decision Brewing Since February, Jamil Muhammad Has Transfered From Vanderbilt
MADISON- In a move Jamil Muhammad said has been brewing as far back as February, the former James Clemens signal caller has transferred from Vanderbilt to Georgia State.
“It was more of a personal matter that I saw back in February as Vanderbilt head coach (Derek) Mason and my family sat down and talked and we all made the correct decision,” said Muhammad, who has already enrolled in Georgia State living in new athletic apartments near the school’s stadium. “I have a new home now and it was a decision that had to be made.”
The talented quarterback signed with the SEC’s Commodores during the early signing period in December. He enrolled into the Nashville school on January 6 and went through the spring semester in class and spring football drills. Muhammad said he went through classes with no problem as he feels the preparation he received at James Clemens set him up to be successful.
“I spoke with Georgia State three weeks ago as even Coach (Wade) Waldrop at James Clemens was a big help to me and was in my corner all the way,” said the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Muhammad. “I checked with several other schools, but they did not have a spot within their programs for me. Georgia State is a new opportunity for me and they welcomed me.”
At the moment, Muhammad has submitted the necessary paperwork to hopefully receive a waiver allowing him to transfer and join the team immediately. If the NCAA doesn’t present him a waiver he will sit out the 2019 season, which he said he’s prepared to do.
The Georgia State Panthers are a Div. 1 school and member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Panthers posted a 2-10 record a season ago with a 1-7 conference mark. Muhammad feels if he can get into some playing time this season he thinks he can make a difference for the Panthers to make a run at a winning season.
The three-star recruit out of James Clemens threw for 1,773 yards and 21 touchdowns and added 942 yards rushing and 18 additional scores on the ground during his senior season with the Jets in 2018.
Muhammad wants to earn a masters degree in education with a minor in business and has the vision of helping the youth of a community by teaching them the correct most effective way to live their lives. “I want to reach out to a different audience when I’ve completed school,” added Muhammad. “Right now I’m anxious to get to play football at my new home.”
