Madison Police has some tips for safe New Year’s Eve celebrations
MADISON – The new year is almost here and with that comes various celebrations bringing in 2020. The Madison Police Department sent out some reminders Monday morning to ensure the next couple of days will be safe.
“If you are staying home, remember your pets,” said MPD community relations officer Teresa Taylor-Duncan. “They can become frightened by fireworks or party crowds. Make sure your gates are shut and locked, pets are identified by chip and tags, and that you protect them from errant fireworks.”
Fireworks and discharging firearms is illegal in the City of Madison. To report these activities, call the non-emergency number at 256-722-7190.
If you are hosting a party:
Consider your “liquor liability” related to your guests. “Provide ample amounts of food and non-alcoholic drink choices. Be prepared to have guests stay over in case of alcohol indulgence. Be cognizant of the age of your guests and aware of who is in your home. You don’t want to be inadvertently hosting an underage drinking party,” Officer Taylor-Duncan said.
She also recommended letting neighbors know that there will be increased traffic and parking. Remind guests not to block driveways or residential access if parking on the street.
“Leave guns in locked and secured places and leave the fireworks to the professionals if alcohol is involved,” she added.
If you are going out:
“Make designated driver and transportation arrangements before you start drinking alcohol,” Officer Taylor Duncan said.
She recommended using ride sharing web sites such as ride.guru to determine what programs are available and make reservations ahead of time with Lyft and Uber. Commercial Taxi services are also available.
“Leave your car locked and at home if possible,” she said. “New Year’s Eve is one of the highest reported nights for auto theft.”
To avoid anyone taking advantage of a party atmosphere to lure someone away, Officer Taylor-Duncan says don’t leave drinks unattended. “Know who you are going out with and check on your friends,” she said. “Leave your itinerary with a trusted, sober person and stick to it. If your plans change, let them know.”
She also said to charge your phone before going out and keep identification on you at all times.
If you drive, be aware that other drivers may be impaired. Stay alert and on the lookout for those who have made poor choices.
“Driving impaired doesn’t just apply to alcohol,” she added. “Don’t use intoxicants of any kind and think you can drive.”
We hope you have a very happy and safe New Year’s Eve and Day.
