Mendenhall brothers both earn Eagle Scout rank

MADISON – Two brothers in Madison, Zack Mendenhall and Brock Mendenhall, have earned the Eagle Scout rank by completing community service projects during the same time period.

Fifteen-year-old Zack and 13-year-old Brock received their Eagle Scout honors together at a ceremony in Athens on Jan. 18. They are both members of Troop 7676 in the Greater Alabama Council.

Zack has been active in Boy Scouts for seven years. In summer 2019, he attended Philmont Scout Ranch located near Cimarron, N.M in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountains. In addition, Zack has participated in other Scout camps in Alabama and California.

Zack’s service project to earn the Eagle rank benefited Wheeler Wildlife Refuge in Decatur. He and his Scout troop built benches that are large enough to hold eight to 10 students at a time. The new benches also are helpful in keeping fishing poles organized for easy access when groups visit to fish at the refuge.

At James Clemens High School, Zack is a member of the Jets swimming and water polo teams. He plays piano and trumpet and enjoys building computers in his spare time.

Brock has been a member of Boy Scouts for five years. He committed himself to achieving the Eagle rank and was determined to finish by the end of 2019.

Brock’s Eagle project helped Manna House food bank in Huntsville. He designed multi-purpose carts, and he and his troop built and donated four of the carts for patrons to carry their groceries.

People who know Brock consider him a natural leader. He is on the Liberty Middle School Debate Team and sings in the Liberty Lions Choir. He also has participated in several musicals and plays. He enjoys music and has taken lessons for ukulele, piano, guitar, drum and voice.

In addition, Brock plays basketball and is a member of the James Clemens Water Polo Team. Although he was too young to attend Philmont Scout Ranch, he has attended scout camps in California and Alabama.

Zack and Brock’s parents are Brett and Erika Mendenhall.

Both boys plan to serve missions for their church and attend Brigham Young University after high school graduation.
