Several more Madison teachers qualify for NBCT credentials

MADISON – Several teachers in Madison City Schools have joined fellow colleagues to claim the distinction of National Board Certified Teacher or NBCT.

During Institute Day in late July, MCS Assistant Superintendent Eric Terrell reported on the latest Madison educators to reach NBCT status.

“A teacher can work to earn National Board Certification as a voluntary assessment program. The intense study helps develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and instill constant models of improvement on campuses across the country,” John Peck, MCS Public Relations Manager, said.

Terrell recognized the following 13 teachers who have claimed the level of NBCT:

* Kelsey Cooper — Discovery Middle School, mathematics. Earned bachelor’s degree at Athens State University. Pursuing master’s degree at University of West Alabama.

* Tammy Fiscus — Liberty Middle School, seventh-grade math and “Math Meets Art.” Previously taught math, science, social studies, reading and writing at Rainbow Elementary School.

* Heather Kell — Heritage Elementary School, fifth-grade math. Earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies (K-6) at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.

* Megan Kerstiens — Bob Jones High School, math. Received bachelor’s degree in secondary education/mathematics at University of Alabama and master’s degree in English as a Second Language at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

* Adrienne King — Discovery, math. Received bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Oakwood University and master’s degree in secondary mathematics education from Alabama A&M University.

* Kara Lawrence – Heritage Elementary School, math. Completed bachelor’s degree in elementary education at UAH.

* Beth Massey — Madison Elementary School, English Learners program. Holds bachelor’s degree from Athens State and master’s degree in education/curriculum and instruction/teaching English speakers from UAH.

* Nichole Murray – Bob Jones, English. Holds bachelor and master’s degrees in English language arts from University of North Alabama.

* Julia Nagle — Columbia Elementary School. Supports and assists all different types of learners in elementary studies.

* Niyiere Joseph — Rainbow Elementary School, fifth-grade advanced math. Received bachelor’s degree in elementary education/grades K-6 and master’s degree in special education and collaborative teaching.

* Sharon Rowland – Bob Jones, English Learner program. Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., master’s degree in foreign language education from University of Georgia, and education specialist from UAB.

* Katie Weir — James Clemens High School, forensics, biomedical science. Completed bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Mississippi State University. Earned master’s degree in biological sciences from University of West Alabama.

* Micky Worley — Bob Jones, English. Earned bachelor’s degree in education/special education from Athens State and master’s degree as reading specialist from University of Alabama in Huntsville.
