Hogan Family YMCA opens sessions for lifeguarding, Tang Soo Do, weights and soccer

MADISON – Hogan Family YMCA in Madison has scheduled new programs that offer fun activities, sessions for new skills and classes to improve health and well-being.

* AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING — Runs from Sept. 3-6. The course gives participants basic skills and knowledge required for lifeguards in pools and aquatic environments.

This comprehensive course offers up-to-date procedures to guard, anticipate and prevent problems and respond to individuals at risk. CPR, first aid and AED certifications are included.

On the first day of class, participants must pass a swim test. Any participant who does not pass the skills test will receive a 50-percent refund.

Individuals must attend all class dates. Meeting times will be Sept. 3, 1-5 p.m.; Sept. 4, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sept. 5, 1-5 p.m.; and Sept. 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Final registration date will be Aug. 27. Lifeguarding students must be 15 years old minimum. Fees are $200 and $300. For more information, call 256-705-9622 or email farris.williams@ymcahuntsville.org.

* TANG SOO DO – A martial art from Korea, based on karate. Participants will learn kicks, punches, throws and joint-locking techniques in self-defense while gaining self-confidence and mental discipline.

In Tang Soo Do, character values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility are cornerstones. Classes are progressive and recognize achievement and skill levels.

Sessions for beginner youth, 7 to 12 years old, will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. from Sept. 2-28. Advanced youth, 7 to 12 years old, will meet from 6-7 p.m. from Sept. 2-30. Adults, 13 years and older, will gather from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 2-30.

Tang Soo Do instructor will be Ola Myszka. Registration closes Sept. 9. Fees are $52 and $72. For more information, call 256-705-9622 or email colby.flack@ymcahuntsville.org.

* “WOMEN ON WEIGHTS” – Teaches women the basics of weight training with circuits training. A personal trainer will show safe and effective lifting techniques.

From beginners to experienced lifters, participants can understand ways to improve strength and build better bones. The four-week class must have a minimum of three participants.

Women on Weights runs from Sept. 1-29 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. or on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. Registration closes Sept. 8.

Minimum age is 14 years old. Fees are $55 and $70. Kia Ray will be instructor. For more information, call 256-705-9622 or email colby.flack@ymcahuntsville.org.

* FALL SOCCER – Shows skills, team work and sportsmanship. Character values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility are program cornerstones. Hour-long practices are held once weekly, beginning Sept. 6. Dates/times are to be determined.

Games on Saturdays will start Sept. 27 and end Nov. 13. The child must be five years old by time of registration. Holiday time off will be Oct. 4-8 for fall break.

Soccer’s final registration date will be Aug. 22. Fees for five- and six-year-olds is $65 and $100. For more information, call 256-783-9622 or email ty.harris@ymcahuntsville.org.

Teams will form for other age brackets: 3-4 years old; 7-8; 9-10; and 11-12.
