Spurlock And Hamlett Of Madison Academy Sign Football Scholarships

Tim Spurlock Signs

Regarded as one of the best players ever to wear the maroon and gold colors of the Madison Academy Mustangs, Tim “Deuce” Spurlock (6-3, 220) has signed a scholarship to a major football power program. Spurlock put his name on a grant to attend Michigan and play for the Wolverines who have made the NCAA Playoffs this season. Recruited mainly as a linebacker, Spurlock was second on the team in tackles in 2021 with 144, including 81 solo. As a receiver on offense he had 13 receptions for 252 yards and three TDs. For the 2021 season, Spurlock was named Region 4 Defensive Player of the Year. He chose Michigan over Clemson, Auburn, Florida and Grambling. “I feel Michigan is a place where I can thrive both educationally and as an athlete,” said Spurlock, son of Timothy and LaTerra Spurlock. “Their education is top notch along with the bond that I’ve developed with the coaching staff and the team were among the reasons I chose Michigan. Their coaching staff is among the best there is and I feel will help develop me on and off the field.”

Kanen Hamlett Signs

Madison Academy senior football player Kanen Hamlett (6-5, 225) has signed a Div. I football scholarship with the Mountaineers of Appalachian State located in Boone, N.C. A two-way starter for the Class 4-A Mustangs, Hamlett was recruited mainly as a tight end. In his senior season at Madison Academy, he had nine catches for 70 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball where he played linebacker, he posted 85 total tackles with four interceptions and one touchdown. “I chose Appalachian State because of how hard I was recruited,” said Hamlett. “The coaches proved to me they wanted me and showed me how special of a place Boone is and how they really do take care of their players.” The All-Region selection is the son of Shanetha Sampson and chose the Mountaineers over the likes of UAB, Western Kentucky, North Alabama and Alabama A&M among others.
