James Clemens grad helps lift UAH men in first place after day one of 2022 GSC indoor championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville wrapped up day one at the 2022 Gulf South Conference Track & Field Indoor Championships on Tuesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex with a first place standing on the men’s side and third place in the women’s competition.
The Chargers men’s team came away with two GSC individual champions, while the UAH women’s team generated two Second Team All-GSC honorees.
Zach Hancock won the GSC Indoor Championships shot put competition for the third time in his career as he topped the field at 17.50 meters. Stephen Tanner also performed well in the shot put, placing third at 15.87 meters.
Cameron Clark joined Hancock as a GSC individual champion in the long jump with a first-place leap of 6.90 meters. This is the second year in a row Clark has won the long jump at the GSC indoor meet.
Michael Gizzi has qualified to compete in two different finals on Wednesday, as he notched first in the 60-meter dash prelims at 6.82 to go along with a sixth-place standing in the 200-meter sprint prelims at 21.85.
Wilson McClain looks to reclaim a GSC individual title for the third time in his career on Wednesday, after qualifying for the 60-meter hurdles finals with a first-place mark of 7.96 in prelims. Baker Schell also qualified for the 60-meter hurdles finals, finishing fifth at 8.52 in prelims.
Additionally, Garrison Hill notched third place in the pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters to help UAH lead through day one.
On the women’s side, Emee Baldwin and Lauren Hamm highlighted the Chargers by tying for second place in the pole vault with heights of 3.35 meters. Both garnered Second Team All-GSC for their performance, with Baldwin collecting her second career all-conference honor.
Zakiria Holifield will compete in the 200-meter dash finals on Wednesday after clocking in at 25.09 for second in the event.
The UAH women also benefitted from a strong performance by Ronni VanZant in the heptathlon, as she finished third with 3240 points. VanZant’s heptathlon performance was highlighted by first place in 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.04.
The Chargers distance medley relay squad of Amelia Brady, Nikki Mata, Erin Cannon and Caroline Ursprung helped the UAH effort with a third-place time of 12:56.56.
The 2022 GSC Indoor Championships wrap up on Wednesday, with the first event starting at 9 a.m.
