Johnson masters learning curve as Madison elementary’s top staffer

MADISON – Kimberley Johnson is grateful for her ‘home school.’ She is “Staff Member of the Year” at Madison Elementary School.

In August 2006, Johnson accepted a job as clerical aide at Madison elementary.

“I’ve worked several summers in the EL or English Learners program with dedicated teachers and admins. It’s an amazing summer program! Madison City Schools is one big family, and I’m thankful to be a part of it,” Johnson said.

Madison elementary is her ‘home school,’ but Johnson also has worked with the EL program at both Mill Creek and Rainbow elementary schools.

“I value our school families and knowledge for my role in the school, and I strive to be efficient every single day,” Johnson said. “Ongoing learning is definitely a part of my daily job.”

Johnson finds excitement when she learns newer, more efficient ways to accomplish a task. “But most of all, I love the kids and am mindful to express it, along with interest and empathy for them and their families,” she said.

Last November, she moved from a half-time to a full-time position in the same job title and accepted many more duties. “It has been very challenging with learning new software, along with new duties, but with very supportive admins and faculty/staff, I feel that I’m succeeding,” Johnson said. “I’m grateful for this new opportunity, and I’m enjoying it.”

After growing up in Decatur, Johnson moved to Madison in 1991. “It has been ‘home’ ever since,” she said. A part-time student at Calhoun Community College for several years, she graduated from Faulkner Christian University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in business.

“My domestic partner is Bobby J. Shelton, who has been by my side through my life’s biggest challenges, including caring for and losing both parents since 2016. My only child is Micah Persons, who attended Madison Elementary School and graduated from Bob Jones High School in 2017,” she said.

“Anyone who knows me, knows almost everything about me,” Johnson said. “Over the past year or two, I’ve been learning and growing in a minimalist mindset, so I’ve been decluttering and downsizing in every area that I can. I believe simplicity is one of life’s secrets to happiness.”

“I’ve always had a special place in my heart for animals — especially dogs. My retirement dream is to have an elderly dog sanctuary,” she said.
