UAH shifts home-opening weekend to doubleheaders Friday and Saturday

HUNTSVILLE – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team is set for its home-opening weekend at Charger Park for the 2023 campaign with a four-game series against visiting Missouri-St. Louis on Friday and Saturday

Admission for this weekend – and to all regular season events at Charger Park – is free again this season courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.

The series has been shifted to be a doubleheader on Friday starting at 12 p.m., which will be followed by a tentatively-scheduled doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Chargers enter the nonconference series with a 2-1 overall record after opening the season at Saint Leo with a series win. UAH fell in last Thursday’s home-opener, but followed up with wins of 9-8 on Friday and 14-11 on Saturday.

Senior Landon Ezzell led the UAH offense with a .600 batting average (9-for-15) to go along with a team-high five runs scored. He hit his first home run of the season in Friday’s contest to give him 21 in his career.

Fellow senior Garrett Bodine extended his hit streak to 36 games in a four-hit weekend at Saint Leo, as the Harvest, Alabama, native chases the UAH and Gulf South Conference record of 38 games set by Vincent Kortbawi in 2013.

Missouri-St. Louis opens its 2023 campaign at Charger Park this weekend after the Tritons went 13-32 overall a year ago including a 12-16 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Tritons top offensive returner is Brandon Olion who batted .412 with 19 doubles last season.

UAH is 2-0 all-time against UMSL, with the two teams last matching up for a doubleheader in the 2001 season.

After this weekend’s series, the Chargers have their first midweek game of the season at Miles on Wednesday.
