Luna Koi to bring its vibe to ‘Sounds of Summer’

MADISON – Soothing melodies will fill the air at Home Place Park when Luna Koi performs in the “Sounds of Summer” concert series on June 27.

Madison Arts Alliance coordinates the schedule for these free concerts. The performance will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

In its description for their genre, Luna Koi is “known for haunting male/female harmonies, resting on a bed of 1990’s alternative influence mixed with modern Americana.” Founding members in this Huntsville-based band are Kelly Joyner, Kevin Lay and Chris McDonald.

Joyner’s cello instructor Kevin Lay introduced her to local guitarist Chris McDonald, and the three formed Luna Koi in 2022.

Followers have praised Luna Koi’s sound as “ethereal, sublime and transcendent.” Music by Luna Koi is available on all streaming platforms, Instagram @lunakoimusic and TikTok @lunakoimusic.

Example tunes by Luna Koi include “Lowlands,” “Rainy Day” and “In Over My Head” all in 2023 and “Where’d You Go” in 2024.

Joyner started performing on stage when she was eight years old and has a background in theater, dance, music and the visual arts. Her musical influences include Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, Bob Segar, The Mamas and the Papas and Joni Mitchell.

Lay has a classical background and plays for the Shoals Orchestra. He teaches cello. McDonald has experience in rock/alternative music and teaches guitar.

The group released their first record with Grammy winner Jimmy Nutt at The Nutthouse Recording Studio in Sheffield.

Luna Koi has hosted an “Open Mic Night” once each month at The Open Bottle in Madison. They often perform locally at St. Stephens, Old Black Bear and The Open Bottle in Madison, The Blind Tiger, The Electric Belle, Salt Factory Pub, Stella’s Elixir Lounge and Rhythm on Monroe, to name a few.

The Fry Box food truck will be on site for a snack or dinner. Honest Coffee Roasters at 92 Shorter St. is nearby.

Rosalie Holcombe serves as President of Madison Arts Alliance. Madison Visionary Partners is the alliance’s fiscal sponsor.
