Registration opens for Winter Knights Chess Tournament

MADISON – Madison City Chess League or MCCL will open its 2025 schedule with the Winter Knights Scholastic Chess Tournament.

Columbia Elementary School, 667 Balch Road in Madison will host the tournament on Jan. 18, 2025. “There are six rated, grade-specific sections and a non-rated section for unrated players in kindergarten through third grade,” MCCL Executive Director Todd Guthrie said.

For Winter Knights, rated players must register in their grade-level section. Unrated players in kindergarten through third grade can play in the non-rated section.

“If you haven’t already, be sure to renew your MCCL membership for 2025 in a separate order before you register for Winter Knights. You will receive $10 off your registration fee,” Guthrie said. MCCL memberships expire at the end of the calendar year.

To open the tournament, a mandatory Players Meeting will be held at 9 a.m.

The available sections at Winter Knights cover students in all grades: grades 11-12; grades 9-10; grades 7-8; grades 5-6; grades 3-4; grades kindergarten, 1 and 2; and Non-Rated grades kindergarten, 1, 2 and 3.

In the designations for round times, the Rated Sections will offer four rounds: 9:15 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The time control will be G/45; d5.

The Non-Rated K-3 Section will offer five rounds: 9:15 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. The time control will be G/30; d5.

For memberships, fees and deadlines, all rated sections require US Chess membership. To obtain US Chess membership, visit new.uschess.org/join-uschess.

Entry fee for MCCL members in all sections is $20. Players who are not members will pay $30.

Deadline to register is Jan. 15, 2025, at 8 p.m. Registration on-site at the tournament will not be available.
