Local students named 2025 semifinalists Presidential Scholars program

They are among 621 semifinalists picked from students in U.S. high schools

MADISON – Urvi Mysore and Erik Wu at James Clemens High School and Eugene Park at Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering have been selected as Semifinalists in the 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Mysore, Park and Wu are among 621 Semifinalists that officials selected from more than 6,000 candidates who expect to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2025. Inclusion in the scholars program is one of the highest honors that a high school senior can achieve.

For consideration for the program, scholars have compiled achievements in many areas – academics, the arts, career and technical fields, leadership, strong character and involvement on campus and in the community.

Officials with the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program selected eight students in Alabama as Semifinalists. Mysore, Park and Wu were the only students who were selected from North Alabama schools.

An Executive Order from President Lyndon Johnson created the program in 1964. The scope of the scholars program expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in visual, creative and performing arts.

In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recognize students in career and technical fields.

All student candidates must submit candidacy materials for review, including essays, self-assessments, reports for their high schools and transcripts.

To select the 621 semifinalists, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, who are experienced in secondary and post-secondary education, evaluates candidates on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities and the quality and content of their essays.

The students’ assessments on the SAT or ACT exams are important components in selection.

In coming months, officials will complete final selection of seniors who will receive the distinction of 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholar. U.S. Secretary of Education Linda Mc-Mahon will announce the names of the finalists.
