Dr. Ed Nichols named District IX’s ‘Superintendent of the Year,’ finalist for state title
MADISON – Dr. Ed Nichols, Superintendent of Madison City Schools, has been voted “Superintendent of the Year, District IX” by the Alabama State Superintendent Association.
Nichols’ honor qualifies him as a finalist for “Alabama Superintendent of The
Year.” Madison Board of Education approved Nichols as superintendent in June 2020. Nichols filled the vacancy left by Robby Parker’s resignation.
His allegiance to public education led Nichols to apply for MCS’ opening. “After being retired from education and working in the private sector for four years, I really missed the interaction with students, teachers and parents,” Nichols said.
“I had served as the Interim Superintendent in 2016-2017 when Dr. Dee Fowler left and enjoyed the team and staff in Madison. I could see that the Madison community is dedicated and focused on the school system,” Nichols said.
Nichol’s first teaching position was Band Director at Austin High School in Decatur City Schools from 1988-1998. He transitioned to administration as Austin’s Principal.
For five years, he served as Assistant Superintendent; in 2012, Nichols was named Superintendent of the Decatur district. He worked as Interim MCS Superintendent in 2016 before Parker was selected as Superintendent.
“Any successes I have enjoyed are totally the result of a great team of administrators, school board members, teachers and staff. I’m especially proud of how we have expanded dual enrollment and career technical programs for our students,” Nichols said.
