Rob Carter, Heritage’s ‘Teacher of the Year,’ supports his students
MADISON – At Heritage Elementary School, Rob Carter can reflect on his day and feel, ‘I did the right thing,’ when he sees clear evidence that his students were engaged, challenged and supported. Carter is “2025 Teacher of the Year” at Heritage.
“Upon learning that I was selected as Teacher of the Year, I was genuinely surprised and overwhelmed with gratitude,” Carter said.
Carter’s first experience with teaching physical education was in Cobb County, Ga. For eight years, he worked with high school students before transitioning to elementary education.
“In 2010, I moved to Madison and began my current role at Heritage Elementary School,” Carter said. “I wanted to work for Madison City Schools because I noticed the district’s commitment to academic excellence, supported by a dedicated administration and faculty.”
Carter also was attracted to the district because teachers and staff often described a sense of appreciation and strong teamwork.
In his work at Heritage, Carter has felt pride and achieved varied successes. “I am proud of the special connections that I continue to make with students, observing growth in fitness scores and the much anticipated Field Day held each year,” he said.
At Field Day in 2012, he led the sixth grade to victory. “I still remember the joy the students felt in winning,” Carter said.
“I’m part of a military family and have moved from place to place, but I consider Madison, Alabama, my home,” Carter said. He graduated from Athens State University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
A little known fact about Carter is that he enjoys turning wood on the lathe to create bowls, baseball bats and vases.
“I have a few hobbies and special interests, but I especially enjoy being on the water and taking my boat out on nice days,” Carter said.
