Sparkman volleyball opens season with wins in tri-match

HARVEST – The Senators started their season this week with a tri-match against St. John Paul II and Madison Academy.

The varsity team took home two wins, beginning with a straight-sets victory over Madison Academy. In the first set, the team pulled through in a close 2624, with top performers including seniors Callie Enabnit and Denise Thomas, sophomore Kaeli Houston and freshman Genie Brown. Team captain Enabnit led in assists and served an ace for the final point. Thomas was one of the strongest hitters, while Houston delivered consistent passing throughout.

In the second set, Enabnit applied pressure with her serves, scoring six straight points. Sparkman ended the match with a 2512 win. Senior Haley Young anchored the defense, countering every attack Madison Academy threw at them. The setters moved the ball to hitters such as sophomore Bella Mayfield and Thomas, who consistently broke through the defense.

“I am so proud of how our team communicated and worked together to really be the best players we could possibly be,” Young said.

The Senators took home a win against St. John Paul II later in the evening as well. In the first set, Sparkman won 25-15.Mayfield was one of the top scorers with her consistent and accurate hits. Thomas, who typically plays outside hitter, shifted to middle and right side.

In the second set, the team lost a close 25-20. Though they dropped the set, they stayed consistent in communication and teamwork. The Senators came together in the third set and pulled out a 16-14 win in a back-and-forth battle.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my senior season. The hustle and grit from all of my teammates was incredible. Starting off the season when we were already down two players could’ve thrown us off track, but we didn’t stop fighting, and we are ready for the rest of the season,” Enabnit said.

“Overall, the team had a great start to its season and will look to use this momentum heading into next week,” Young said.
