Itty Bitty Bakers sweetens the community with classes

MADISON – Sweeten your day, Itty Bitty Bakers offers baking classes for locals, from 18 months to adults.

Itty Bitty Bakers owner Kayla Johnson has been offering baking classes for all ages. “It’s about getting people in the kitchen, enjoying the benefits that come with cooking and spending time together,” she said.

Johnson offers parent-and-me classes, where a parent can come and bake with their 18-month-old to 4-year-old child. She also offers a class for ages 3 to 6 years old, a class for ages 7 to 12 years old, and classes for teenagers. Recently, she started offering adult classes too.

Johnson said that she enjoys creating opportunities for children to use their creativity and providing an option for children who may want an activity that is not sports-related.

“I think there are so many benefits to allowing kids to be creative,” she said. “A lot of the things that are offered for kids are sports related. And it’s really amazing to see kids bake, decorate and try things that they’ve never tried when it comes to creating a baked good or even trying an ingredient that they’ve never tried before.”

Through providing a space for children to bake alongside their peers, Johnson said that she enjoys watching the little bakers think through the steps of their recipe and take pride in their finished product.

“I love watching their faces as they concentrate on measuring things accurately,” she said. “It just shows how much they’re capable of when it comes to their focus. And then, of course, when they share it with their parents, when they get picked up, they’re so proud of what they’ve done. Usually, their parents make a big deal because they’re so impressed and so proud of what their child has accomplished. It’s a really sweet moment to get to watch.”

Along with teaching local children how to bake at Itty Bitty Bakers, Johnson said that she always makes sure to test her recipes with her children.

“They are my testers,” she said. “All my recipes for classes have to be approved by them. Many a class has had three or four trial recipes before finding one that my kids and others enjoy, because not every recipe you find on the internet is a good one.”

Along with baking classes, locals can reach out to Itty Bitty Bakers for a variety of other services.

“We also do birthday parties and private classes,” Johnson said. “If you have a group of friends and you’re like, ‘hey, we wanted three cupcakes one Saturday morning,’ we can make that happen. And birthday parties are a lot of fun. And then I also do homeschool classes, like I’m in the process of setting up a homeschool class right now.”

For more information, visit Itty Bitty Bakers Huntsville on Facebook or visit www.bakehsv.com.

“My first parent and me class is on Sept. 23, and we’re going to be doing apple cider donuts,” Johnson said. “On Sept. 13, I’m doing a chocolate camping cake. And there’s an older kids class, so a 7-to-12year-old class and a teenager class that day. And will, they’ll get to learn how to make a chocolate cake, and they’ll each get their own, and then we’ll make a chocolate frosting and they’ll get to decorate it with a fun camping scene using all things edible.”
