Sparkman, JC score wins, Bob Jones’ perfect record ends against Florence

HARVEST – Junior Braylon Lawson rushed for 356 yards on just 18 carries with two touchdowns as Sparkman continues to follow a familiar pattern during the 2025 football season, mirroring the path they took a year ago.

The Senators defeated visiting Huntsville 36-28 Friday night for their second straight win following three losses to open the season and moved into a four-way tie for second place in Class 7A, Region 4. Last season, Sparkman played the exact same schedule with the same results.

Sparkman (2-3, 2-1), Bob Jones (41, 2-1), Florence (2-3, 2-1), James Clemens (2-2, 2-1) and are all tied behind Austin (4-1, 3-0). Huntsville (3-2, 1-2) is in third place ahead of Grissom (1-3, 0-3) and Albertville (0-5, 0-3) in Region 4.

Huntsville has lost two straight games.

Lawson averaged 19.8 yards-percarry with a long run of 70. Junior quarterback Joshua Naylon completed 18-of-23 passes for 149 yards and two TDs and added a rushing score.

Seniors Zayden Bodner and Nathaniel Davis had TD receptions.

The Senators led 13-0 after one quarter, 26-14 at halftime and 26-21 entering the fourth quarter.

The Panthers pulled to within 2928, but with just over 7:00 remaining Lawson broke free for a 70-yard TD run.

Senior Blake Battle had 11 tackles, including five solo and one for a loss, to pace the Senators. Junior Kirlando Ayers and senior Anthony Seaton both added eight tackles. Junior Jaire Haynes had a sack.

Sparkman will host Mae Jemison this week in a non-region game, while Huntsville has a bye.

James Clemens 40, Grissom 6

In Madison, the host Jets shook off the news they would have to forfeit a season-opening win and routed the Tigers.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association ordered the Senators forfeit a 35-21 non-region win over Gardendale for using an ineligible player. The violation was self-reported and included a fine and probation.

Junior quarterback Matthew Evers completed 14-of-19 passes for 203 yards and two TDs for the Jets (2-2, 2-1 in 7A, Region 4). Junior MJ Gideon rushed for 73 yards on nine carries with one TD, and junior C. Richey rushed for two TDs.

Sophomore Aaron Gonzalez had four receptions for 64 yards with one TD, and senior J. Delbridge caught a TD pass.

Jocq Dennis and Mason Rhodes both had seven tackles, including six solo, and Dennis had a sack and fumble recovery. Junior Kaleb Pryor also had seven tackles, including five solo, and sophomores Jon Leon and Brandon Walters both had a tackle for loss with Walters’ being a sack. He also forced a fumble.

Senior Mason Rose had an interception and caused a fumble.

James Clemens visits Spain Park in Hoover this week for a non-region game, while Grissom (1-3, 0-3) hosts Albertville (0-5, 0-3) with the winner climbing out of the region cellar.

Florence 24, Bob Jones 6

In Florence, the Patriots unbeaten season came to an end against the Falcons, who pulled into a four-way tie for second in 7A, Region 4.

Senior Kion Triplett rushed 23 times for 106 yards and one touchdown for Florence. Quarterback Jimmi McDonald completed 9-of-16 passes for an even 100 yards with touchdown passes to Carter Graves and Cavonte Green.

For Bob Jones, senior quarterback Gakobey Gill was 15-of-37 for 187 yards with one TD. Senior receiver C Caterina had five receptions for 127 yards and one TD.

The Patriots were held to 19 total yards rushing. Jaden Rice rushed nine times for 31 yards, but Gill had six carries for -12 yards for all the team’s rushing attempts.

Florence led in total offense 242206. Senior R. Washington had nine tackles with six solo and two for a loss. In non-region play this week, Bob Jones (4-1, 2-1) hosts Gadsden City, while Florence (2-3, 2-1) has a bye. The Patriots will then try to get back on track in region action Oct. 3 when they host Sparkman.
