Heritage welcomes Demetria Patterson as assistant principal
MADISON – Demetria Patterson, a familiar personality at Heritage Elementary School, is now working as the school’s Assistant Principal.
“I am excited to join the Heritage family as the newest Assistant Principal at Madison City Schools,” Patterson said.
Patterson has served in the Madison Aspiring Administrators Program or MAAP at Heritage until Madison Board of Education recently approved her appointment as assistant principal.
Patterson fills the vacancy for Kristin Kolenich, who will be principal for Russell Branch Elementary School, opening in the 2026-2027 school year.
Originally from Memphis, Tenn., Patterson taught first grade for 11 years at Newberry Elementary School. “After moving to Huntsville in 2015, I taught kindergarten at Mill Creek Elementary School for four years,” she said.
She served in MAAP at both Mill Creek Elementary School and Heritage for six years total. “I learned from some of the district’s top administrators,” Patterson said.
In addition, Patterson served as Director of the Elementary English Language or EL Camp for three years. “As camp director, I worked with a few of MCS’s finest teachers from across the district, helping our EL students reach their greatest potential as newcomers,” she said. Patterson also worked as Extended Day Director at Heritage for 2.5 years.
“My academic journey has been one of continuous learning and growth,” Patterson said. She earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood from University of Memphis, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Union University and an Education Specialist degree in instructional leadership from Cambridge College.
She is married to Joseph Patterson, a salesman at Landers McLarty Nissan in Huntsville. “We have two sons: Kylan, a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is currently a Marketing Campaign Specialist at Hexagon in Madison. Our youngest son, Joshua, is a freshman at the University of North Alabama,” she said.
Kylan and Joshua both graduated from James Clemens High School, “JC the Place to Be,” Demetria said.
“In my free time, I enjoy learning new things, shopping and watching NCIS marathons. I look forward to continuing to make many new memories with my ‘Ram Fam,’” she said.
