Shop with a Cop: Santa came to town, and he brought helpers

MADISON – The aisles of the Madison Target on Hwy 72 looked a little different on Saturday morning. Between the red carts and holiday displays, there were flashes of uniforms, bursts of laughter, and the unmistakable sound of joy echoing through the store. Santa had come to town, and this time, he brought helpers.

Local first responders traded their radios and duty belts for shopping lists and smiles as they took part in a Christmas shopping spree with less fortunate children from our community. First responders walked side by side with wide-eyed kids, helping them pick out toys, clothes, and gifts they had been dreaming about all year.

The Madison Police Foundation hosted the Shop with a Cop event, supporting local families in need, giving children the opportunity to shop alongside Madison Police Department officers.

For the children, the experience was nothing short of magical. Some raced excitedly down the toy aisles, others carefully weighed their choices, and all couldn’t stop grinning. Their giddy excitement was contagious, drawing smiles from shoppers and store employees alike.

“This is what the season is about,” one responder shared. “It’s about giving back and making sure every child feels the magic of Christmas.”

The event served as a powerful reminder that first responders do more than protect and serve in times of crisis. Today, they showed up as mentors, friends, and stand-in Santas, making sure no child was left without a reason to smile this holiday season.

As the children checked out, clutching their treasures and thanking their helpers, it was clear that the impact went far beyond the gifts themselves. For many, it was a day they will remember for years, a day when strangers became heroes, and kindness filled every corner of the store.

In a season often marked by busy schedules and long to-do lists, today’s event was a heart-warming pause, a reminder that the true spirit of Christmas lives in generosity, compassion, and community.
