Huntsville officials unwrap new West Huntsville Recreation Center
HUNTSVILLE – A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the opening of the West Huntsville Recreation Center last week, a 27,350 squarefoot facility near Zierdt Road that will meet a growing need in the fast-growing region.
“This center will serve as a vibrant community hub,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “Cutting the ribbon on this recreation center in the western corridor of our city marks our commitment to providing accessible quality of life resources to all Huntsville residents.”
Located at 150 Martin Rd. SW, just west of Zierdt, the facility features two gymnasiums that are customizable for basketball, volleyball, indoor pickleball and more. The facility also includes a fitness center and multipurpose rooms for programming and community events. Exterior site work includes four lighted pickleball courts.
“The opening of the West Huntsville Recreation Center is yet another tangible improvement in the quality of life for District 5 Residents,” said Council Member John Meredith. “It is a meaningful step forward in creating a sense of a larger, shared community when residents of previously isolated neighborhoods can come together in fellowship under a common roof.”
The new recreation center was designed by Bill Boehm Architects and Chorba Contracting built it.
Programming for the West Huntsville Recreation Center will include activities such as open play basketball and pickleball, arts and crafts, youth events, opportunities for community connection and more.
“This opening reflects the hard work and dedication of our team and the strong support of our community,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “This facility will allow us to offer more programs, reach more residents and create a welcoming place where people can grow, connect and enjoy recreation close to home.
