Madison County Commission chairman Mac McCutcheon retiring in March

Madison County Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon said last week he will retire in March.

The former Alabama Speaker of the House stated the decision was related to personal health issues and was made after much thought and prayer.

“Reflecting on my journey, I’m overwhelmed with a sense of pride and fulfillment from the challenges we overcame to the triumphs we celebrated,” wrote McCutcheon in a letter released after the email. “Every moment has been invaluable. My career has been more than a job. It has been a significant part of my life story, enriched by the incredible people that I’ve had the honor to serve.”

“Thank you for your support and guidance. I am sincerely grateful for your friendship,” added McCutcheon.

McCutcheon became Madison County Commission chairman after being appointed by Governor Kay Ivey on January 31, 2023, following U.S. Rep. Dale Strong’s (R-Huntsville) election to Congress. He was later elected to his first full term in November 2024.

“Throughout his tenure, Mac McCutcheon has played a meaningful role in shaping Madison County through his leadership and service,” Madison Mayor Ranae Bartlett said. “His commitment to thoughtful governance, collaboration and well-being of our communities helped shape progress across the region.”

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said the announcement marks the close of an extraordinary career of service. “I want to personally thank him for his many years of leadership, integrity, and friendship. Mac has been an outstanding partner and a driving force behind our community’s success – from his early days in law enforcement to his roles as a civic leader, Speaker of the House in Montgomery, and most recently, Chairman of the Madison County Commission. In every position, he served with character, humility and a genuine commitment to the people he represented.”

McCutcheon’s retirement is effective March 1, 2026.
