Volunteers needed for MVP’s Big Weekend of Service
MADISON – The work of volunteers will result in improvements around the city during the second annual “Serve Madison: Big Weekend of Service.”
Madison Visionary Partners or MVP is organizing the project schedule for June 19-20. The weekend’s objective is “to bring individuals, families, schools, faith groups and businesses together in service to the community we all call home,” MVP Executive Director Christina Hearne said.
To-date, several projects are available:
• Madison Greenways & Trails – June 20, 9 a.m. to noon. On a new trail, clear vegetation, debris and trip hazards. Registration with Land Trust required; guardians can register for minors. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old; a parent/ guardian must accompany anyone younger than 16 years old. Location on Google Maps is maps.app.goo.gl/GwoRHL8P2hYUpK1NA.
• Adopt-A-Spot – June 19, 9 to 11 a.m. Trash pickup on Hughes Road between Discovery Middle School and Bob Jones High School. Vests, grabbers and trash bags provided. Meet in Asbury Church parking lot, 980 Hughes Road.
• Next Step Farms — June 19, 9 a.m. to noon. Farm maintenance, such as clearing pasture, relocating/ assembling new chicken coops, installing perimeter fence and weeding garden beds. Must be at least 18 years old; parent/guardian must accompany anyone younger than 18 years old. Wear outdoor clothing and muck boots. Farm animals may be in pastures so volunteers should be comfortable with animals. Address is 465 Smith Vasser Road in Harvest.
• Trash removal — June 20, 9 to 11 a.m. Trash cleanup on Huntsville Brownsferry Road in two segments: Burgreen Road to County Line Road; Burgreen Road from Powell Road to Andrea Lane. Minors need adult supervision. Vests, grabbers, gloves, trash bags and water provided. Meet in Trustmark’s south parking lot at 12050 County Line Road.
• Madison Public Library — June 20, 9 a.m. to noon. Painting a Twister board in the Children’s Garden. Supplies provided. Dress appropriately for painting. Fourteen-yearolds and older can help. Library’s address is 142 Plaza Blvd.
• Kids to Love — June 19, 10 a.m. to noon. Sort supplies and pack backpacks for annual More Than a Backpack campaign. Children in foster care will receive the backpacks, a permanent possession if they must move. Owning school supplies lets the child focus on learning. Warehouse address is 140 Castle Drive in Madison.
