TSA and HSV issue summer travel tips

With America 250 and World Cup events over the next month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is anticipating an extra busy summer for travel.

Between June 30 and July 6 alone, TSA is expecting 18.7 million passengers nationwide. The increase in passengers is expected to reach Huntsville as Huntsville International Airport (HSV) recorded its busiest month ever in May with 173,748 passengers, a 10.7% increase from May 2025.

In light of this, TSA along with HSV has issued tips for smooth and safe travels.

First, they urge passengers to pack smart.

“To pack smart, all you have to do is start with an empty bag,” said TSA Spokesman Gervais Joubert. “We know a lot of our passengers will probably travel with bags that they carry on a daily basis, and if you carry that bag on a daily basis, you probably have something in there you didn’t realize was a prohibited item.”

Emptying out those bags reduces the chances of bringing a prohibited item to the airport. Prohibited items in carry-on bags include weapons and liquids more than 3.4 ounces.

Travelers are also encouraged to arrive to the airport early. Passengers should factor in time to park their car, check luggage, and arrive at the TSA checkpoint. The recommended time is 2 hours ahead of their scheduled flight.

Lastly, TSA reminds passengers to bring their RealID and have it ready to show at the TSA checkpoint. ConfirmID is available online at TSA.gov for those without RealID for a $45 fee. ConfirmID users are encouraged to bring proof of purchase with them to the airport.
