Alabama back-to-school sales tax holiday comes July 17-19
MADISON – Alabama shoppers can save money on back-toschool items during the state’s 21st annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, according to the Alabama Department of Revenue.
The event begins at 12:01 a.m. July 17, and runs through midnight on July 19. During the three-day holiday, shoppers can purchase school supplies, computers, books and clothing and forego Alabama’s 4% state sales or use tax. In addition, more than 300 cities and counties across Alabama are also waiving their local sales taxes, giving families even more savings. Athens, Decatur, Madison, Huntsville and their counties are all participating. To find out if your city or county is participating, go to revenue. alabama.gov/sales-use/ sales-tax-holidays.
This year’s holiday includes broader exemption limits so families can save more than in previous years. The Alabama Legislature earlier this year increased the dollar threshold for sales tax holidays and indexed them to the Consumer Price Index, resulting in the higher exemption limits, according to the Department of Revenue.
