Schools in Madison continue to be recognized across the country and the Madison City Schools Board of Education has approved combining two bond issues to start work on several projects in the city.
The executive directors of the Commission on Elementary, Middle and Secondary Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) recently recognized the Madison City Schools Board of Education for having all of its schools in its system accredited.
The school district is considered a "2001-2002 Super System for Quality Schools," and recognized by SACS for its accreditation accomplishments and continued successes in improving educational opportunities for students.
In addition, Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Henry Clark has been invited to the 107th annual SACS meeting and professional development training in San Antonio in December.
SACS accreditation is non-government and voluntary. It helps educational institutions improve through a systematic process of evaluation that focuses on improving teaching and student learning. SACS accreditation means an institution meets minimum standards and demonstrates a commitment to continuously providing quality education programs.
SACS accredits more than 12,000 educational institutions as wells as schools in Central and South America and in the Caribbean.
In other board matters, school officials have opted to seek one bond issue of $21 million rather than combining two separate bond issues of $10 million and $11 million later this year.
Funds from the bond issue will be used for an addition to Discovery Middle School, which calls for more classrooms and a new band room. Additional funds will be used for technology upgrades, a new elementary school, additional practice fields at Bob Jones High School and new furniture throughout the system.
Funds from the bond issue will also be used to build a new stadium and construction work currently under way at Bob Jones – slated for completion next January.
