Madison's sixth elementary school will be located on Balch Road.
The Madison City Schools Board of Education has agreed to purchase 32 acres of property on Balch Road. Construction should begin in 2004 with the school ready to open for the 2005-2006 school year.
On Feb. 5, the state Ethics Commission agreed to the purchase since the family of board President Don Spencer owns the land. The commission voted to allow the purchase if certain provisions were met. Those provisions included Spencer not attempting to influence the board on the sale; not voting on the purchase; and that the property was appraised at or below market value.
Spencer abstained from voting on the land purchase.
The school board approved the 2003-2004 school calendar. The first day of school will be Aug. 7. The last day of school will be on May 20. A fall break is scheduled on Oct. 6-10. Spring break will be held on March 22-26 and Christmas break will be held on Dec. 19-Jan. 7, 2004.
