A group of Madison residents are forming an organization aimed at supporting African-American heritage.
The Madison African-American Alliance Group is in its initial organizational and developmental stages and is currently seeking additional members to its advisory board committee.
The group's spokesperson, Sharon Stewart, said there is a need for unity, cooperation, and the desire to work together for the prosperity of the community. It's also being formed to make sure the needs of African-American citizens are being met in Madison.
"The primary goals are to raise community awareness and appreciation of the historical and cultural heritage of African-Americans who live in Madison," Stewart said. " It's also being formed to advocate the concerns of African-American citizens and coordinate efforts to identity, address, and resolve a variety of community, economic, business, cultural, social, and educational issues."
There are six members in the group at this time.
"We are accepting any citizen in Madison – black, white, or other – that shares this interest," Stewart said. "Members are welcome from any sector of the community."
Stewart said the group currently serves as a volunteer group and is willing to assist and serve Madison.
"Our main focus will be African-American heritage and improvements within economically disadvantaged communities," Stewart said. "We are also willing to work along with any other civic, citizens, non-profit, business or governmental group within Madison. We are here and willing to assist."
