Legacy concludes first year of fathers’ program

Legacy Elementary became the first Alabama school to launch a Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) program. The nationwide program was launched this year. It encourages dads, granddads, stepdads, uncles, even “father figures” to volunteer one or two days a year at the school.
Watch D.O.G. dads provide safety and support for students and faculty. More than 300 dads and kids responded to the pizza night kick-off event. More than 100 dads signed up that night to take a day off from work and share their time and resources.
At least one to two Watch D.O.G. dads are in the building every day.
Students introduce their dads on Lion News Network each morning. Watch DOGS are scheduled in classes for academic support, help with morning and afternoon car/bus duty, and lend a hand wherever and whenever they are needed.
Michael Pettey, one of the school’s counselors, applied for a grant that funds the program.
