Mustangs make it two in a row

The Madison Academy Mustangs rolled off their second Class 3A, Region 7 win in a row Friday, Sept. 10, as they took down Randolph, 30-6, in the two schools’ first matchup in more than 30 years.

The Mustangs piled up nearly 500 yards of offense, finishing with 330 on the ground and 150 through the air.

“We made some big plays, and we made a lot of bad plays,” said Madison Academy head coach Eric Cohu. “We turned the ball over too many times and we’ve just got to clean some things up.”

Madison Academy (2-1, 2-0) led by as much as 17 in the first half.

“We missed some opportunities and we really felt like we should have had more,” Cohu said.

Randolph’s first-half points came off of a fake field goal following a deep 70-yard pass to set the offense up inside the 5-yard line.

“I was proud of our defense for forcing a fourth down, but they just made a great call,” Cohu said.

The Mustangs’ points came on a run by quarterback Joe Dobson, a run by running back Marcus Sease, a run by Khyle Jackson and field goal by Bennett Smith, but it was the performance of junior Hunter Olive that caught the attention of Cohu.

“Hunter Olive had a big game for us offensively, defensively and on special teams,” Cohu said. “He’s really stepped up for us.”

Olive finished with a touchdown on offense and scored another on defense on a 90-yard interception return, but the play was called back. Olive also ran a fake punt for a first down that led to a Mustang touchdown.

Madison Academy will return to region action Friday as they play host to New Hope.
