Bake sale to raise money for teachers

The bake sale will be tonight, Oct. 18, in the school's cafeteria.

Horizon Elementary’s PTA is having an Old Fashion Bake Sale Oct.18, in the school’s cafeteria to raise money for classroom supplies.

The sale will be from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., before, during and after the second grade musical performance.

Monies raised will purchase various supplies for teachers at the school, according to PTA President Lauren Plott.

“We’re using the money raised to buy teachers things like copy paper, paint and other disposable items.” Plott said. “The state usually give teachers a certain amount of money per year, and this year, there wasn’t enough money in the funds. So, these teachers are pretty much depending on the PTA.”

The sale will have items such as muffins, pies, cakes, cookies, tea, cider and hot cocoa.

The bake sale was started last year by PTA member Jennifer Willoughby for the same reason. Plott said the sale last year garnered more than $600, and she expects it to do the same or better this year.

“It did really well last year, especially to be a spur of the moment thing,” Plott said. “The PTA has been an invaluable service to the school. Our parents are phenomenal at Horizon. They always step up to the plate, and with the bake sale, we see how people can come together. We are very fortunate to have parents very involved in the classrooms and wanting to help.”

Plott said the sale is open to the public and she encourages support for the community.

“Everyone is welcome—even if you don’t have children there, or live in the neighborhood, or just want to come out and enjoy food and have fun,” she said.
