Madison schools to support St. Jude

The Marathon and Half-Marathon will be Dec. 4, in Memphis. The schools are asking for donations.

Three local elementary schools are doing their part in the fight for a cure for cancer.

Daphne Jah, principal at West Madison Elementary, is running the Half-Marathon, a portion of the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, Dec. 4, and so will faculty from Rainbow and Columbia Elementary.

“I am thrilled to let you know that the Rainbow Elementary family will once again work to raise funds in support of the thousands of children from all over the world battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases at St. Jude,” said Dorinda White, principal at Rainbow.

As part of the Character Education Program, the school is using the fundraiser to teach students about giving. The fundraiser is tied to the Memphis Marathon weekend. White will travel to Memphis to participate in the marathon.

“We have several events for the students to participate in as we discuss St. Jude and our contributions,” White said. “I realize the timing of this charitable campaign may be tough. The economy has affected most of us and we are constantly asked to give.  However, regardless of tough economic times, children are still diagnosed daily with life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Those children and their families can’t afford to wait until things get better. As always, our charitable campaigns are not mandatory in any way. However, if you can make a monetary donation it is greatly appreciated.”

Rainbow has its own website on the St. Jude page. To make donations, visit www.mystjudeheroes.org/rainbow. White said for parents to e-mail their child’s teacher, so they can give credit for the donation.

Columbia Elementary also recently kicked off their campaign.

Nelson Brown, principal at Columbia, said Jase Bell, a sixth-grade student will represent the in the marathon.

“Jase is a strong runner and he has a desire to help the kids of St. Jude,” Brown said. “Rebecca Harrison will also be running in this event.  She is the parent of two students at Columbia, and of a child named Emmy, who is currently receiving treatment at St. Jude.”

Brown said Emmy would be attending Columbia for kindergarten next year.

“The community of Columbia has been very generous in raising money for this cause in the past, and I am sure that your generosity will continue this year,” Brown said.
