Luncheon teaches students culture

Drinkard was one out of many fifth graders chosen to attend the luncheon where they dined on food from around the world.

Shelby Drinkard, a student at Madison Elementary, was chosen to attend the International Harvest Luncheon, Nov. 18 at the Farmer’s Market on Cook Avenue.

Fifth graders from the county and city schools were chosen by teachers to attend the luncheon, where they dined on food from around the world.

“This program taught the students what it is like having lunch in other countries like Russia, China, Chile and Nigeria,” said Daphne Drinkard, Madison’s PTA president. “Each student was asked to choose one of the countries, Shelby chose Chile. They received passports from that country that gave them information about that country.”

Drinkard said the students learned about the top 10 Alabama agriculture products and the top five moneymakers for Alabama.

“They also learned about the import and export trade of American agricultural commodities,” Drinkard said. “This was a honor that Shelby was able to attend and learn about agriculture around the world.”
