Toney says so long to school system

Toney will retire from the Madison City Schools system July 31.

Clara Toney has served the Madison city school district for 19 years. Now, her retirement on July 31 is fast approaching.

Toney currently works as the administrator of federal programs, student assessment and pupil services for the Madison city school system.

“Dr. Toney will be sorely missed,” said Dee Fowler, superintendent. “She brings a lot of valuable characteristics to the table. She is a very hard worker.”

Fowler continued by saying something loved about Toney is that she’s a product of Madison. She was born and raised in the city, and she graduated from Bob Jones High School.

Toney said she will miss her office mates, as she’s part of a wonderful team.

“I’d like for them to know that it has been very rewarding to work with them,” Toney said. “I have learned so much from them, and I will miss them very much.”

Fowler described Toney as bubbly and having a great personality. He said she enjoys being with people, and her love for children is evident.

Mary Long, director of elementary education, said, “Dr. Toney is very task-oriented. I mean, when she starts on a project she hangs in there until it’s finished and wants what’s best for kids.”

Furthermore, Long said Toney is highly thought of by her peers in regard to her knowledge of programs such as the English Language Learners program.

Fowler was quick to sing Toney’s praises regarding her work with federal programs, saying the work is quite laborious.

“Dr. Toney worked with those, and we never received any citations from the federal government with our federal programs. And that’s to her credit,” Fowler said.

“It’s been hard work,” Toney said, “but I have just absolutely loved every second of it.”

Toney said it is hard to leave, but that she looks forward to the changes that will come with the new opportunity for restructuring.

As for whether she’ll find work elsewhere, Toney said she would consider it if an opportunity presents itself. She said she’s interested in providing consultation for other school districts.

Her immediate plan after retirement, however, is to take a couple months off to enjoy the summer.

“It’s been a good run,” Toney said. “It really has.”
