Students excel in music, literature, dance and film with Reflections

After earning top places at their schools, students earned city-level honors for Reflections.

“Reflections is designed to be an inspirational program to encourage students from first grade through senior high school to pursue their arts ability,” Emily Cook said. Cook is president of the Madison City Council of PTA.

For music in primary grades, Brandon Todd of Columbia Elementary School took first place with “People’s Song”; Madeline Edwards, second, Rainbow Elementary School, “Dancing Flowers”; and Lindsey Tucker, third, Columbia, “Ocean Blue.”

Finalists in intermediate grades for music went to Lawrence Zhang, first, Columbia, “Reachin’ Unity”; and Will Griffith, second, Rainbow, “Diversity Differences.”

Other music finalists included Sophie Krome, first, Discovery Middle School; James Ealon, first, Bob Jones High School, “Diversity in Time”; Victoria Van, second and third, Discovery, “Passacaglia Chaconne” and “I Am Who I Am.”

For literature, primary winners were Malea Love, first, Columbia, “Jane and Her Difference”; Alaina Boyen, second, Columbia, “The New Kid”; Alex Douthitt, third, Madison Elementary School, “Martin Luther King’s Kindness”; and honorable mentions to Riley Ott, Madison, “Hands Meeting Other Hands” and Makenzie Hill, Madison, “Earth’s Creatures.”

For intermediate, Janae Slade at Madison won first place in literature for “Diversity Means Sharing your Culture”; Kyra Henry, second, Madison, “Color”; Zoe Sorensen, third, Columbia, “Rainforest Life”; and honorable mentions, Emerald Everheart, Heritage Elementary School, “My Family” and Andrew Cawson, Columbia, “How I Am Diverse.”

For middle grades in literature, first-place winner Leah Hong of Discovery wrote “Autumn Leaves”; Kayla Buckelew, second, Discovery, “The Conflict of Diversity”; Logan Whelchel, third, Mill Creek, “The One World”; and honorable mentions for Emily Campbell, Columbia, “The Diversity Pond” and Shelliy Billman, Liberty Middle School, “Caveat.”

In dance, Megan Sheehan of Madison won first place with “True Colors.” Lucy Lenor of Columbia was first-place winner for film production with “Friends & Flowers.”

Sandy Bukovac served as city chairman for Reflections.
