Harold Houk; Jan. 25, 2012

Early Wednesday morning, Jan. 25, Harold E. Houk died at his home in Madison after a lengthy illness.

Harold was born and raised in Paint Rock Valley. Following graduation from Woodville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served proudly and faithfully for 21 years. His awards and decorations include five Air Force Commendation Medals and an AF Outstanding Unit Award. He was a Vietnam veteran. Harold retired in 1972 and settled in Madison with his family.

After working at Fox Army Hospital and Huntsville Hospital, Harold completed his HVAC career at Thiokol Corporation on Redstone Arsenal. Harold loved fishing, tracing the family’s roots and researching family lore.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Nellie.

Harold is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Gary (Jean) Randy and Janet and Judy; five grandchildren; three step-daughters, Brenda McBride (Mark), Vicki Caschetta (Larry) and Susan Crouse (Paul); ten step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; the Hardee’s Madison gang; and his AACS reunion friends.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home. Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 28 at noon in the chapel with Pastor Larry Fincher officiating. Burial was at Clay Cemetery in Princeton.

The family would like to thank Hospice of North Alabama and special caregivers Mary Beth and Patsy.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The American Lung Association or the building fund for Pleasant Springs Baptist Church of Huntsville.

Berryhill Funeral is assisting the family.
